The 2003 finalist Venus Williams (USA) was forced to end its participation in the Australian Open tennis through injury.
Seeded four and seven times champion Grand Slam Williams gave up after only seven games of the rallies in the third round against Germany's Andrea Petkovic because of muscle strain on the hip.
Petkovic led to the game and 30:0. Of Germany's next opponent will be the winner of the tournament in 2008 Maria Sharapova (Russia).
After dropping out of Williams in the second round there will be no representative of the United States for only the fourth time in the history of Grand Slam for the first time since Roland Garros in 2008.
