World number 3 Novak Djokovic beat Enes Latvian Gulbis 6-4, 6-2 for an hour and 12 minutes in the first round of the tournament in Basel and began a successful title defense in the Swiss city.
"You never know what to expect in the first round of a tournament," said Serbian player after the game.
