The second-seeded Andy Roddick defeated Frenchman Jeremy Chardin with 6:4, 7:6 and won the quarterfinals of the open championship of Japan.
The American took a relatively quiet first game, but much more effort failed to win in the second and closed the match with a tiebreaker.
"It is always dangerous because it takes many risks, but I play in these situations very well," said Roddick opponent.
American tennis player who reached the semifinals of his only prior involvement in 2008 was his first tournament since been dropped in the second round of US Open.
In the next round Roddick will face or against five seeded Gael Monfils of France or Italy's Andreas Seppi against.
