![]() | Sabalenka on the fact that there are fewer shortcuts in women`s tennis: Not every girl is as fearless as Bublik3-11-2025 |
Aryna Sabalenka explained why women use shortened ones less often in matches. – As a player you can do everything – otherwise you wouldn’t be the first racket in the world. But how do you explain the fact that [Alexander] Bublik completed 36 shortcuts in the match against [Jack] Draper?
– It was crazy. I watched the match.
– In one match. There are few shortcuts in women`s tennis. Even [Jasmine] Paolini always tries to hit hard like you, she can have three drop shots per encounter. How would you explain this? If Bublik hit 36 shortcuts and won most of them against a powerful player like Draper, why don`t the girls do the same?
– Good question. The drop shot is a pretty risky shot and you have to be very subtle and have a good understanding of the court to pull it off.
Not every girl is as fearless as Bublik. Honestly, the match was crazy. I wanted to watch the fifth set. In the first one, I was rooting for Draper because Bublik did crazy things on the court. It was as if whatever he decided to do went flying into the court.
He could hit shortened serves. It`s pointless. So this is quite a risky strike. If you feel like that`s the day it`s going, then yes, you should shorten it - because it`s a good shot, especially on clay where there`s extra time, and if you`re a generally strong player, just to break the rhythm and make the other player guess. In this case, we should definitely hit drop shots more often - but this is a risky shot, and not everyone can hit as finely as Bublik did yesterday.
But now girls are trying more and more often than before to break the rhythm. So we are getting better and better in this regard, ” Sabalenka said at the Roland Garros press conference.
