10 Manchester United fans were arrested for fighting with Twente fans. Manchester police carried out a series of early morning raids after receiving information about an organized fight between fans that took place in a vacant lot in September. On 25 September, Manchester United and Twente played to a 1-1 draw in a Europa League match held in Manchester.
It is reported that two groups, which included about 40 fans in balaclavas, began a clash that was planned in advance. The fight was fought with bare hands without the use of weapons, but frightened witnesses called the police. Riots soon broke out again at a pub in central Manchester. A group of United ultras are believed to have followed the Dutch and carried out another attack, forcing bar staff to take cover.
Police began an investigation and reviewed CCTV footage from the scene of the incident.
A number of suspects, including a 64-year-old man, were arrested in a large-scale operation this weekend. The detainees were detained for a day while the investigation continues. Most are likely to be released on bail and subject to a series of strict measures that will likely prevent them from attending Sunday`s derby at Manchester City Stadium.
With the Manchester derby just days away, this is another stark reminder that violence of any kind, football related or not, will not be tolerated, a Manchester Police spokesman said.
