McNamee about Safin`s comeback after a medical break in the AO-2005 final: Physio said: Marat was sad, lonely, and he just wanted to talk to someone. This turned the tide of the match28-12-2024 |
Paul McNamee remembered Marat Safin`s victory at the 2005 Australian Open. 2005 was an outstanding year at the Australian Open. We celebrated the 100th anniversary of the tournament and the semi-finals were amazing: Hewitt beat Roddick and Safin came away with a match point against Federer.
The finale was incredible. Lleyton won and controlled the situation in the second set. At the beginning of this game, Marat called [physio] Ivan [Gutierrez].
Then Ivan returns, and I ask: What’s wrong with Marat? He answers: He said he plays lousy. He was sad, lonely, and just wanted someone to talk to. He just wanted to talk about how bad he felt. So I just listened to him.
And this turned the match upside down (Safin won 1:6, 6:3, 6:4, 6:4 – Sports’). He broke Lleyton. It`s the end of the game, the former Australian Open director said on The Sit-Down podcast.
McNamee led the Australian Open from 1995 to 2006.
