World number two Iga Swiatek beat No. 13 Barbora Krejcikova in the first round of the final WTA tournament – 4:6, 7:5, 6:2. The Polish woman took a 3:2 lead in head-to-head matches.
In the second set, Szwiatek trailed 0:3 with a doublebreak, but equalized the score. She led 5-0 in the deciding set.
In 2024, she gave away the first set in 11 matches, eventually winning five of them.
Schwiatek played her first match with the US Open. This is her 60th win of the season. She is the third player in the last 30 years to win at least 60 games in at least three consecutive seasons. Before her, this was done by Martina Hingis (1997-2001) and Caroline Wozniacki (2009-2011).
This is also her sixth consecutive victory at the finals: last year she took the title, going through the tournament without defeat.
