Cesare Fiorio advised Audi to hire Mattia Binotto.
Binotto left Ferrari at the end of the 2022 season. Fiorio drew parallels between this event and his own departure from the post of sporting director of the Scuderia in 1991.
There are similarities, but my departure in 1991 was more complicated. The agreement that I concluded with Ayrton Senna was blocked, and I realized that it was better to say goodbye, since I could not get one of the strongest pilots in history, ” Cesare said in an interview with Corriere dello Sport.
Fiorio positively assesses Binotto’s work and believes that the specialist can be useful to Audi:
[Second place in the Constructors` Championship is] a very good result considering previous seasons. Achieving such progress is no easy task. The success of Formula 1 and the increase in ratings is largely due to Ferrari`s return to the top.
Did Ferrari need a change? I would leave Binotto, whom I always considered an excellent engineer. The F1-75, along with Red Bull, became the best car of 2022. The championship was not won due to lack of reliability, poor strategies and some mistakes on the part of the drivers.
Has Binotto`s vision become a problem? No, he was a very good engineer, but leading a team was a different job. However, if I were someone like Audi, who is aiming for Formula 1, I wouldn`t miss him.
In December, the publication Blick claimed that Binotto was offered to head Audi`s technology department.
