Sergei Parshivlyuk remembered working with Unai Emery at Spartak in 2012.
– A 24/7 person in football. When he joined the team, he already understood what he wanted to see. Plus the amount of exercise. I remember we went out for training in Tarasovka - all three fields were filled so that there were no pauses for transitions. Chewed everything!
When he returned to Spain, he did not need to convey his ideas through an interpreter, the mentality was native. This led to Sevilla winning the Europa League time after time.
– I think the language barrier is to blame. And the specifics of another country. In Spain, he could convey and show everything, explain everything in an individual conversation. But at Arsenal his English is not at the same level. The press, which laughs at his language, an unsuccessful period in the life of the team - all this together led to such results.
In Spartak, many players needed a different approach. There was no necessary connection between him and the team. The results did not go well, and this affected the atmosphere within the team. It’s hard for me to say because I only spent pre-season with him and then got injured.
But as a person who is completely immersed in football, knows it and understands it, Emery later proved a lot. And his current return to the Premier League proves that he is highly rated.
– I was not a participant in this process, and it is difficult for me to imagine what it could look like. What, he came to the football players and said: Play poorly? Well, that`s stupid. Just a different mentality, ” said the Dynamo defender.
After Spartak, Emery worked with Sevilla, PSG, Arsenal and Villarreal. Since November 2022, the Spaniard has been coaching English Aston Villa.
