Shelton on reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open: I know that my father did not sleep the entire match and watched. A little embarrassed that I disturbed his sleep pattern1-08-2024 |
Ben Shelton talks about how his father influenced his career. Brian Shelton was world number 55 and won two ATP singles and two doubles tournaments.
“He influenced my tennis more than anyone else. ”He is a former professional player who also went through this whole process. In tennis, he didn’t have nearly the same opportunities that he had in my childhood. He had a much more difficult path. Like me, he studied, graduated from Georgia Tech, and then went on to have a successful career on tour.
I have an invaluable opportunity to learn from him, to adopt life experience: he did not have comfortable conditions, so he knows all the difficulties and problems associated with getting on tour. He is one of the best tennis analysts I have ever met.
I can talk to him before each match, after them, he tells me the advantages and disadvantages of my game, I think the disadvantages are more important, because I can correct them, improve them, this is a very useful resource.
- Not yet. In fact, I didn`t open my phone right after the match. I haven’t had time to talk to any of my relatives yet.
I know my dad didn`t sleep the whole match because he was texting my coach Dean. I know he was awake and watching.
I`m sure he`ll call me in the morning or I`ll call him. At home he has a job and a team. It’s a bit of a shame that I disturbed his sleep pattern (smiles).
