Ex-UEFA investigator on the 1st case against City: An army of lawyers interfered with the auditors, but we still have irrefutable evidence of fraud. The nuclear submarine case is even bigger31-07-2024 |
Former UEFA investigator Yves Leterme commented on the case against Manchester City.
The former Belgian prime minister and head of the Financial Fair Play and licensing case led to City being banned from the Champions League for two years in 2020. The decision was appealed by the club to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and the ban on participation in the European Cup tournament was lifted.
Today, the Premier League accused the townspeople of numerous violations of financial rules and announced that it had submitted information about more than 100 episodes from the 2009/10 season to the 2017/18 season for consideration by the relevant commission.
This is a good initiative. And the fact that City will not be able to appeal to CAS makes the case even stronger. And there is another element: the scale of the case is greater than in the case of the UEFA investigation, both in terms of the time period and in terms of content. We were limited to five years and therefore could not use some important evidence.
[In the first case] there was a complete lack of transparency in financial information. With the help of an army of lawyers, the club did everything possible to interfere with the work of our auditors. In addition, it turned out that the money supposedly coming from sponsors was actually given by the owner. And there were contractual ambiguities.
Thanks to emails and bank statements, we now have irrefutable evidence. And I am convinced that Man City cheated.
The problem was that UEFA`s decision could be challenged in CAS, which has no real jurisdiction. Those who make the decision are always chosen from the same 10-12 people and can reduce the punishment if they consider it too harsh, Leterme said.
