Naomi Osaka commented on the first match on clay since 2019.
The Japanese woman beat Elise Mertnes in the first round in `s-Hertogenbosch - 6:2, 6:4.
I`m treating it like it`s my first year on grass. Even now, this is my first time participating in this tournament, so in a sense I feel like a newbie.
I`m very happy with my serve. I probably felt more confident on this surface than on any other, so I`m glad that I was able to get into the tempo pretty quickly.
What do I need to improve? Probably to become more confident at the reception. I felt like I was a little hesitant, like I was back on the ground again. At some point I thought about softening it up. But I know that I must be confident in myself.
This year I felt better on clay than on the first day on grass. But they tell me that in training I play quite well. I think I just need more time and self-belief.
Hopefully if I win more matches during the preparatory tournaments [before Wimbledon], I will believe in myself. This is the key point.
