David Coulthard: Red Bull and Horner are sensitive to any criticism. You just need to accept it

David Coulthard explains how Red Bull should deal with criticism.

In recent seasons, Red Bull has repeatedly found itself at the center of scandals, which often caused an aggressive reaction from team manager Christian Horner. In particular, in 2022 it turned out that the team from Milton Keynes had exceeded the spending ceiling.

I can only imagine how Ferrari gets hit every day in Italy. There`s an old saying that Mark Webber often says: To know someone, you have to walk a mile in their shoes. Of course, Red Bull and Christian Horner are sensitive to any criticism - it`s personal.

When it comes to the press, everyone has the right to interpret events from their own point of view. I was a Formula 1 driver, so I can judge many things that others cannot, but this does not mean that others cannot have their own point of view.

Our view of life would be very narrow-minded if we only listened to those who agreed with us or said nice things. I guess McLaren is sensitive to criticism, Mercedes was often criticized when the team was dominant. You just need to accept it.

There were bullies at my school, and I`m sure there were bullies at yours too. People are people, you can`t put the genie back in the bottle. We have created all these channels that are a way of influencing irritated and extremely capricious people. There`s a Piers Morgan style where you take extreme views and get the public talking about something without resorting to slander. It can be argued that there is good business journalism. But just because a reporter is an educated wordsmith doesn`t mean he isn`t driven by financial interests. A small scandal is a good way to create hype. [But] I think we can all agree that threatening anyone, privately or publicly, is unacceptable.

Christian, as a leader, is in the spotlight, and it makes no difference whether you manage an F1 team or are the captain of a football team. You`re in the arena. This does not mean that we should accept everything, but it is up to the governing bodies to educate the audience. Although it’s hardly possible to enlighten those who hate you – that’s how they are designed, ” said the ex-Red Bull driver.
