Australian men`s team captain Lleyton Hewitt has commented on Nick Kyrgios withdrawing from the United Cup the day before kick-off.
The rest of the players and I were in the same boat. I knew no more than others. It was hard for everyone. More likely due to a lack of communication and the fact that the guys were not in the know.
I`m so proud of this guy [Alex de Minaur], his effort and the fact that he prioritizes playing for his country. I`m very proud of him. I think it was hard for the whole team the last 24 hours not knowing what was going on.
Asked how Kyrgios could improve his approach to communication, Hewitt said: Probably just answering. This is what they usually do. Some time passed [before he responded].
It`s more about communication. If this concerned only Nick, then that would be one thing. When it comes to the team, other people and their preparation for the Australian Open, where they have to play the best they can, that`s probably the hardest thing.
Kyrgios responded to Hewitt`s words after Ajla Tomljanovic withdrew ahead of her match with Harriet Dart on the second day of the tournament. Australia by that time was losing to Great Britain with a score of 0:2.
