Matteo Berrettini commented on the victory over Denis Shapovalov.
The Italian beat him for the first time in the second round of the tournament in Stuttgart – 6:4, 6:4.
I knew that I had never beaten him. In the past we played two very difficult matches, but they were a long time ago (in 2018 and 2019-Sports). I knew I had to play my best tennis to win. And I did it.
I play well on grass. I think this is my best surface, I like it and I love playing in Stuttgart. I`m very happy that I reached the quarterfinals. Now I need to rest a little and wait until tomorrow to think about it.
I concentrated on serving. It`s especially important here to make [Shapovalov] feel the pressure. Even on his serve, so that he knows that he cannot give it away, otherwise he will have problems.
On the grass I like to cut putts. This was very useful today against a southpaw with a one-handed backhand. We practiced these shots a little yesterday and this morning and it worked in the end.
Berretini will play James Duckworth in the quarterfinals. They had never met before.
