The NHL may increase the number of games in the regular season from 82 to 84.
The matter is expected to be discussed at the clubs` general managers` meeting in March 2023.
Some teams are unhappy that the number of games within the division is unbalanced. However, such matches usually attract more attention from fans and provide a larger audience on national and local television.
Currently, each team plays 3 or 4 matches against their division opponents (26 games in total);3 matches against teams from their conference from another division (24 games);2 matches against teams from another conference (32 games).
With the introduction of two additional matches, teams will be able to play 4 matches (two home and two away) against each division opponent (28 games).
It is noted that to implement this idea, the league, in particular, may reduce the number of preseason matches.
The NHL previously used an 84-game regular season system in two seasons (1992/93 and 1993/94). Each team then played 2 matches at neutral sites (in cities where there were no NHL clubs) in order to popularize the game.
