In Europe, the system for selecting teams for the Euro and World Championships will change.
The UEFA Executive Committee has decided to amend the structure of the qualifying stage.
At the qualifying stage, 12 groups of 4 or 5 teams will be created. Teams that take first place will receive a direct ticket to the World Cup. Teams finishing second in the groups will either advance to the main stage automatically or participate in the play-offs (along with teams eligible to qualify for a place at the European Championship based on their performance in the Nations League).
The changes will come into effect after Euro 2024, i. e. starting with the qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
