Medvedev dropped ingloriously in Rotterdam and will not threaten Nadal4-03-2021 |
Number 1 and number 3 Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev were eliminated in the first round of the ATP 500 indoor tennis tournament in Rotterdam with a prize fund of 980 thousand dollars. Medvedev, for whom this was the first match since Novak Djokovic lost the final of the Australian Open last month, lost to another Serb, Dusan Lajovic, with 6:7 (4), 4:6 in an hour and 36 minutes of play. Medvedev scored 12 aces in the match against none for Lajovic, but made an awful lot of mistakes, including 8 doubles in service.
In the first set, Medvedev was the first to make a breakthrough for 3:2, but in the next game Lajovic returned it. In the tieber, the Serbian took the lead with 5:1 points and after the change of fields did not allow his opponent to get closer. In the second set, Lajovic made the only breakthrough in the ninth game, and in the tenth he closed the game at zero points on his serve. In the next round, Lajovic will play Croatia`s Borna Coric. A similar inglorious drop-out befell the German Alexander Zverev. Number 3 in the scheme Zverev lost 5:7, 3:6 to Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in just 79 minutes of play. Bublik, 43rd in the ATP rankings, gave only five points to his opponent when the first serve was scored, which helped him a lot to make a turnaround in both sets. Zverev started the match with a break in the first game, and there was one at the beginning of the second for 2:1, but in both cases Bublik made a turn at the end, winning 5 of 6 and 5 consecutive games, respectively.
Bublik`s next opponent in the tournament will be the American Tommy Paul. However, the day for the number 6 in the scheme David Goffen turned out to be successful. The Belgian, who lifted the title in Montpellier a few days ago, defeated the German Jan-Leonard Struff 6:4, 6:0 and in the second round he will meet the French veteran Jeremy Chardy.
