Darby County has officially named Wayne Rooney as the team`s permanent manager. The former England captain took over the Rams in November as a temporary coach when he replaced Philip Koku, and his performance impressed the owners. Rooney has signed a contract for the next two and a half years, and other celebrities such as Shay Given, Leanne Rossinier and Justin Walker remain at his headquarters. Former England coach Steve McLaren has retained his position as technical director and management adviser.
I was stunned when I returned to England and got this opportunity. The stadium, the training complex, the people in the headquarters and the young players, the fans, of course. I had other offers, but instinct told me that Darby was the place for me. It is a great honor to have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of people like Brian Clough, Jim Smith, Frank Lampard and Philip Coco, and I can promise everyone that there will be no turning stone in trying to achieve what we want with the potential we have in this historicclub, says Rooney.
The Rams are in the unenviable 22nd position in the relegation zone with 19 points, just like Sheffield Wednesday, who is in the saving 21st position.
