Rooney backs Solskayer, but wants Pozettiano to be manager of Manchester United17-08-2019 |
Former Manchester United striker and current US United Wayne Rooney praised Red Devils` interim mentor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but cited Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino as his favorite to take up the post. The Argentinean is known to be the main contender to lead the team next season.
First of all, Ole should be given a chance and this is a discussion to discuss with the Glaser family. But if I had the opportunity to appoint someone, I would totally bet on Pochettino. I think United for the past 20-30 years, since Sir Alex Ferguson`s time, has been based on young players he has imposed. I think Pochettino takes the best out of his players no matter if they are younger or older. You see that some of the young players he established in Tottenham and Southampton made it to the national team. So I think he has all the coaching qualities, but also a desire to give the youth a chance.
It was not a pleasure to watch the team in the last year and to know that the players were not satisfied. They did not enjoy themselves, and I think that all Solskjaer did was tell them: go out and play, go out and express yourself, enjoying yourself. When you play at United, you are good enough to know how to play and what to do on the pitch. Of course, you need the small details, but the most important thing that players need is just to play and enjoy themselves, Rooney told ESPN.
