Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have achieved victories in the fourth round of US Open, making an important first step towards a possible match with each other in this Grand Slam.
The second placed Nadal, 12-time champion in Grand Slam competitions, recorded a new record of 18 consecutive wins on hard courts, beating the Croat Ivan Dodig with 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Federer, who is seeking his 18th Grand Slam title and sixth in New York, recorded eight aces and added 34 winners for the triumph over the Frenchman Adrian Manarino with 6-3, 6-0, 6-2. Federer's next opponent is 19th placed Tommy Robredo who hasn't victory against Federer in 10 matches between them so far. Nadal again confronts the 22nd Philipp Kohlschreiber in the scheme, eliminated the hope of the hosts John Isner. Nadal has 9 wins and 1 defeat against his next opponent.
