The courageous game proved insufficient Lleyton Hewitt against the Serbian showman Janko Tipsarevic and former number one quit the Australian Open at the start after another defeat with 6-7 (4), 5-7, 3-6.
Tipsarevic showed very strong tennis, especially in the second set, and spoiled the day for local fans who today saw the third dropping of their countryman. Earlier, the same fate befell Bojana Bobushich in women and Matthew Ebdon in men.
At "Rod Laver Arena" the audience warmly supported the 31 years old Hewitt, who hastily pulled with two breaks in the first set. Tipsarevic was able to dramatically raise the level of his game and ultimately not only catch up, but also took the tiebreak with 7-4.
The second part of the Serb managed to break through the initial shock of his opponent, by winning his service games, and in the third set quickly lead with 3-0 the game. Hewitt is far from refusing and was able to even the score, but then Tipsarevic won the next three for the ultimate success.
So ended the 17th consecutive participation of Hewitt in the Open Championship of his homeland. Throughout his career the Australian has only once skip the fourth round - in 2005, when he reached the final and lost.
