Two-time champion Maria Sharapova (Russia) qualified for the quarter-finals on hard courts in Tokyo, Japan with U.S. $ 2,168,400 prize fund.
Seeded second in the main draw Russian beat Lucie Shafarjova (Czech Republic) with 6:2 7:6 (5) in 1:43 hours. Sharapova led with 3:0 in the first set, winning easily.
In the second part Shafarjova made three breakthroughs and led with 6:5. The Russian broke back, equalized and won in the tiebreak with 7:5.
In the quarterfinals Sharapova will play against No. 8 in the scheme Samantha Stosur (Australia) who eliminate Dominika Cibulkova (Slovakia) with 6:4, 7:5.
Number 3 Agnieszka Radwanska (Poland) also quarterfinals after beat Jamie Hampton (USA) with 6:4, 6:3. Angelica Kerber (Germany) defeated Urszula Radwanska (Poland) with 6:1, 6:1.
The Italian Sara Errani beat 9th placed Marion Bartoli (France) with 3:6 6:2, 6:2.
The Russian Nadia Petrova won in a dramatic match against Petra Martic (Croatia) with 7:6 (2) 6:7 (1), 6:4.
