Clijsters with a new injury, Serena and Ivanovic to win in Toronto10-08-2011 |
No. 2-ranked Kim Clijsters (Belgium) received a new injury that threatens her participation in the U.S. Open later this month. Clijsters retired in 6:3, 1:2 in the second round qualifier against the Toronto Tse Chen (China) due to partial rupture of the abdominal muscles.
Clijsters said that she felt more pain during a light workout earlier in the day before the meeting, but tried to play.
"During the game things got worse. I have a partial tear of the abdominal muscles on the left and slight swelling. I already had a reconstructive procedure on the ultrasound. I hope to be ready as soon as possible," said 28-year-old Clijsters.
This was the first match for Clijsters after her refusal in the second round of the tournament in Den Bosch (Netherlands) in June after injuring his leg.
"It is too early to worry about the U.S. Open. There are a few more weeks, will try to prepare," said Clijsters, who won titles in New York over the past two seasons, and in 2005.
Former world number one Serena Williams (USA) continues its successful return to court after almost a year absence due to injuries and illness.
13-fold champion of the Grand Slam scored seven aces and recorded a convincing victory in the first round in Toronto with a 6-0, 6-3 Alyona Bondarenko over (Ukraine) for 46 minutes.
Another former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic (Serbia) also continues after the first 6-1, 6-1 over Chinese qualifier Shuai Zhang of 55 minutes.
