World No. 7 Tomas Berdych saved three machbola before to beat Belgian qualifier Ruben Bemelmans with a 5-7, 7-6 (8), 6-4 in first round match of the tournament in Halle.
Bemelmans, who is 169th in the world rankings, had three opportunities to win the match in the tiebreaker of the second set, but missed them. Berdych escape the second consecutive loss in the first round, having been dropped at the outset of Roland Garros, where he was defeated by Stephen Robert in five sets, wrote Thursday.
"I felt very comfortable on the court. Fight to the last point, trying to win every point, because I know how hard it is to close a game," said the Czech Republic's victory.
Berdych in Halle final game in 2006 when he was beaten by Roger Federer in the following year won the title after success over Marcos Baghdatis.
