Spanish veteran Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo brought the first surprise in the men's circuit this year's Open de France tennis.
33-year-old Hidalgo side in question number 19 Marin Cilic of Croatia with 7:6 (5), 6:4, 6:4, after almost three hours of play in meeting the first round of the competition.
Cilic, osminafinalist at Roland Garros the past two seasons, was far from his best form. He allowed goals 67 unforced errors and five drill, which proved fatal.
Hidalgo again will meet in the second round to compatriot Albert Montanes, who beat the hosts representative Marc Gicquel of 6:4, 6:4, 6:2.
The seventh-seeded David Ferrer of Spain had no problems in the first round and reached the routine success with 6:3, 6:3, 6:1 against Finn Jarkko Nieminen for 85 minutes.
Ferrer did not give any opportunity to break his opponent in the match and placed 29 winning shot.
So he expected in the second round winner of the match between Julien Benneteau (France) and Rui Machado (Portugal).
