Scot Andy Murray is ranked the third round of Masters Series in Rome after beating Belgium's Xavier Malisse with 6:2, 2:6, 6:3.
Murray, fourth-seeded of the tournament, conceded his serve break of five times but managed to beat his opponent in three sets.
The fifth-seeded Robin Soderling of Sweden also found a place after a difficult second round success over Spain's Fernando Verdasco with 2:6, 7:5, 6:4.
Verdasco serve to win the match at 5:4 in its favor in the second set but Soderling made a breakthrough and then began reversing the meeting.
Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych, the seventh-seeded, eliminated Juan Monaco (Argentina) after 6:2, 6:2, and Richard Gasquet of France reached the second round after success over Igor Andreev (Russia) 6:1, 6:2.
