Dinara Safina, which eliminate Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova in the tournament in Marbella, exited the race in the quarterfinals, having dropped in the match with Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.
Former number one from Russia side Pironkova in the second round, but once behind by 1-5 in the first set, decided to quit. It is not clear how serious his injury is the sister of Marat Safin.
Azarenka, champion of the tournament in Miami, held last week, said after the easy success: "I feel bad way to win, especially against an opponent like Dinara. It has long been a problem with injuries and I hope you recover soon."
Azarenka will play Sarah Eran in the semis after the Italian beat eighth placed Alexandra Dyulgeru of Romania 6-2, 6-2.
