American male tennis recorded historical downfall on a Grand Slam tournament while Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray remained their course to a semifinal with each other on US Open.
Playing with wild card Tim Smichek was the last hope of the hosts to have a representative in the fourth round of the tournament - something that has always been done in the Open era. Marcel Granoye however executed the 109 th in the world Smichek with 6-4, 4-6, 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 to reach the last 16 stage.
In fact USA has no representative in the fourth round of any of the Grand Slam this year.
Djokovic, the champion here in 2011, took 95th in the world Joao Souza, who was subdued in first round Grigor Dimitrov. Nole defeated the Portuguese with 6-0, 6-2, 6-2.
The third placed and acting champion Andy Murray did defeat the German Florian Mayer with 7-6, 6-2, 6-2 while the veteran Lleyton Hewitt continued his presentation with great success 6-3, 7-6, 6-1 over the Russian Evgeny Donskoy .
Djokovic, seeking his fourth consecutive final in New York, will now play with Granoye who have won his only game so far.
Murray again goes against the Uzbek Denis Istomin, who ousted the 20th in the scheme Andreas Seppi with 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 3-6, 6-1. Istomin will play in the phase of the last 16 for the first time of US Open, after ended the series from this year of seven victories of Seppi in matches that lasted five sets. Murray has one win over Istomin, with whom he had played once.
